Asus is actually called ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated and is a Taiwanese company that produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. However end users more commonly call them by their brand name Asus (pronounced ah-SOOS and not AY-sus).
They have listings on both the London Stock Exchange and the Taiwan Stock Exchange. Interestingly in 2007, one in every three desktop PCs sold around the world used an ASUS motherboard and this helped the company reach revenues in 2007 of $6.9 billion.
TH Tung, Ted Hsu, Wayne Hsieh, and MT Liao founded Asus in 1989 in Taipei in Taiwan and all four founders worked as computer engineers for Acer. It is believed that the name ASUS originated from Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology where the first three letters of the word were dropped to give the resulting name a high position in alphabetical listings.
