Toshiba is a multinational manufacturing company, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. The company's main business is in Infrastructure, Consumer Products, and Electronic devices and components.
Known for being one of the worldwide top 20 semiconductor sales leaders, Toshiba is also the world's fifth largest personal computer manufacturer, after HP, Dell, Acer and Lenovo.
Toshiba was created by the merging of the Tanaka Engineering Works and Hakunetsusha in 1939 and the new company was called Tokyo Shibaura Denki which quickly became nicknamed Toshiba. It was only in 1978 that the company officially changed its name to Toshiba.
The group grew strongly, both by internal growth and by acquisitions, buying heavy engineering and primary industry firms in the 1940s and 1950s and then spinning off subsidiaries in the 1970s and beyond.
Toshiba was also responsible for a number of Japanese firsts, including radar in 1942, the TAC digital computer in 1954, microwave ovens and transistor TVs in 1959, Japanese word processor in 1978, MRI system in 1982, laptop computer in 1986, DVD in 1995 and HD DVD in 2005
