Acer Incorporated is a Taiwanese multinational electronics manufacturer. Its products include desktops and laptops, as well as personal digital assistants (PDAs), servers and storage, displays, peripherals, and e-business services for business, government, education, and home users.
Acer is estimated to be the third largest computer manufacturer in the world (by sales) after HP and Dell Inc.
Acer was originally called Multitech, and was founded by Stan Shih, his wife Carolyn Yeh, and a group of five others in 1976. They eventually renamed their company to Acer in 1987.
It all began with eleven employees and $25,000 in capital. Initially setting its stall out as a distributor of electronic parts and consultant in the use of microprocessor technologies, but over time it began to grow as a PC manufacturer. The global headquarters is located in Hsinchu City, Taiwan.
Acer purchased Texas Instruments' mobile PC (laptop) division in 1997.
During 2000, Acer split off its manufacturing operation as Wistron Corporation, to focus itself on branding business. Acer grew worldwide while its labour force contracted and by 2002, the Acer Group employed 39,000 people with dealers and distributors in more than 100 countries.
